Back in my hands again because the car failed to start, so he wouldn't be able to take it to the shop. I went over, and measured the ECT, and it was in the range of 1.6K, at the range of 40-50 deg. Plugged it back in, checked battery voltage, which seemed fine, had him crank, and it started up, much to his surprise. Probably just due to different starting temperature.
Fan kicked on pretty much right away; put my scantool on it, and it read about 210 deg. Temp gauge on dash also read above midway, stone cold.
Interesting thing is that it wouldn't start when I unplugged the ECT; I figured it would start by reverting to default limp-home values, but it wouldn't. Plugged the sensor back in, and it started. Maybe it'll only go into LH mode if it's already running, because I know it kept running when I disconnected it while testing it before.
I confirmed the dash indication was working with the ECT by substituting some fixed resistor values on it, and saw the gauge going right along with the values indicated on the scan tool, and the needle position looked reasonable compared to the temp readings.
Made it over to the dealer and picked up a new sensor, and it measures 2.27k ohms at 70 degrees, so that's definitely different from the old one.
Stuck it in the fridge, and it reads 4.62k at 35 degrees-
I'll map out some other resistance values with different temperatures and post it for reference, since that information seems to be unavailable. That should be the easiest way to unabiguously diagnose the ECT sensor.
We'll see what happens when I put it in...
