Hybrids: city=good / highway=not-so-good >>

Hybrids are great for city driving. They use the electric motor to assist with braking, and that recharges the batteries. Then they use the electric motor to start the car from stops. It is a system that works very well.
For highway driving, the batteries never get a chance to recharge, and the electric motor never really gets a chance to assist. Plus you end up hauling around the electric motor and batteries, when you are not really using them.
Diesel is the way to go for highway driving. If the Civic and Prius are posting higher highway mpg's than the VW Diesel, it is probably because they are tiny econo-boxes to begin with, and you get a more substantial car with the VW. If you can wait, I believe there will be a lot more selection in Diesel cars in the States pretty soon.
