I agree with you 100% that a civic hybrid is a better car than the Prius. But for your driving I think a VW TDI would be difficult to beat. You can get a lightly used one and register it in NY... I believe it needs to have 7,500 miles on it. And they are sold in CT and PENN and possibly NJ too, so used ones are around. We have had our Golf for 18 months, no mechanical issues whatsoever. I have had to get some manufacturing defects repaired, all were covered with no hassle. We recently drove it one weekend to NYC and the next weekend to Williamstown Mass, for a total of just under 500 miles, we got 49 MPG, a good mix of highway, city, and back roads. Its much more fun to drive than a Prius, and the car feels much more expensive inside than it actually was... I would not rule it out except that they are getting extremely expensive to buy used... Strong demand, limited supply, and VW wont be importing them anymore at the end of this model year due to changing emmissions rules.
