There's no question they use less fuel. And as a commuting car I think they are fine. But for a 2 hour with lots of high-speed interstate I'm not convinced they are the best choice. Just my opinion, and haven't driven one.
I think it's easy to look at the numbers and see fuel savings, but those numbers depend on how fast you're going and other factors. Suppose you can average 40-42 on the highway in a Prius. Other econoboxes do mid- to upper 30s, so the savings are not necessarily all that great. But heck, my wife's 9-5 wagon gets 34 mpg at 65 mpg and that's a lot more car than a Prius. Calculate the real dollar difference over a year and you may find it's not all that huge a savings.
Plus if you will keep the Prius long term, you're looking at battery replacement at some point, which will not be cheap and is very much a part of the cost of "fuel" for a hybrid.
If I commuted in traffic I'd buy one--that's where they shine, but not for lots of highway. However, a couple of Prius owners I've talked to say they have actually changed their driving habits since having the car, so drive much more gently---and that helps their mileage.
