Mike, as you know, I had one. It was not "racecar" like. That's a quality that left with the 9000. It was boring. I couldn't wait for the lease to end. I spent much time in newer service loaner 9-5's including aeros as mine was always in the shop. I never drove one I found "entertaining". The turbo was replaced 4 times under warranty...the ONLY turbo replacement ever in a Saab for me. The list of other repairs is as long as many I see outlined on this forumn. I find the 9-5 very average. I remember getting a Buick Century from Enterprise on one of those visits, and felt it compared pretty well to what Saab was offering.
I still entertained the notion of trying another in '06... but a 9-5 with an
$ 8000 lower sticker actually leased for nearly $60/mo more than the M...thanks, at least in part, to the fabulous resale values of the 9-5.
My '99 had a residual of $16,400 ( 95k 3.5 years), and sold in Atlanta for $7400. The buyer called me, as I had left my complete records in the car. Because of my maintainance, he(primarily Saab used car dealer in NC) bought it for his mother in law. Don't know how it turned out for them.
The M is way more "racecar" like than a 9-5, but it doesn't compare to a 9000. I consider NO mechcanical issues "trouble free". I believe if the memory in a non operational system had dropped in most cars, they would have told me to re-load the information and go on....I was shocked that Nissan replaced the entire unit...figured they knew something I didn't.
BTW, the main operational software was "re-loaded" in my 9-5 at least 4 times in the first 25k.
The difference between Japaese cars and most others is that they are simply put together better. My M is a first year vehicle. I think the first 25k with 0 real issues validates why most informed people choose Japanese. In a way, I wish it weren't true...but it is.
You are very hard on Japanese, me thinks because they kicked your butt! There are a number of rising sun sedans that now run circles around anything from Saab or GM. The Japanese have improved incredibly as Saab has deteriated. Infiniti as well as Nissan was in the toilet until Renault took the wheel. The change there since '99 is historic and just the opposite of Saab's. The G AND the M now enjoy the highest residuals in the market....explains why my lease was such a great deal.
As far as historic vehicles go, I think those days have passed. If you ever watch auctions of cars from yesteryear there are plenty of folks who seem to agree. I can't think of any current cars that I'd want to keep forever. I will, one day, keep another c900 vert and probably a 9000.
What else can I say....I wish I could agree with you on this. I just think you started selling Saabs too late to understand. Coming from Saturn, anything would seem terrific. Stangely, now Saturn is WAY ahead of Saab.... thanks again GM.
