Saturn? State of the art? In who's universe? Saturns were never good cars n the '90s - poor assembly, terrible materials, questionable ergonomics. The engines sounded like garbage once revved past a few grand, and they put out pretty poor numbers (hp, torque, and economy) at the same time. People bought into the marketing, not the car. I spent most of the '90s laughing at all my friends who did just that, and enjoyed every second of motoring around in my "crappy old Saab" while they had alternators, batteries, transmissions, timing chains, and miscellaneous interior components replaced. My Saturn-owning roommate ('95 SL2) went through two alternators by 30k, and his transmission died at 38k. My girlfriend ('98 SL1 IIRC) ate four batteries and two alternators before her timing chain BROKE at 92k. Hanging out on alt.autos.saturn as I did back in the '90s, this stuff was hardly uncommon.
I'm personally amazed the brand survived... I am glad they did - I think the stuff their putting out today is actually pretty darned good. But Saturn in the '90s? Not so much.
