Yeah, I have to agree about the cargo volume. With a hatchback like the Astra (I owned a '92 Civic Si before my 99 9-3, so I am familiar with the concept) you have to either sacrifice people or stuff. Of course, with my 9-3 I can carry both. With a 60/40 split you can refine the people/cargo mix a bit, but with my 9-3, it feels like it is effectively a wagon with a sloping roof rather than a 5 door hatchback type car. My father in law refers to my 9-3 as "The truck" because of all of the stuff I jam back there
Anyway, I don't think that I am going to be able to swing a 9-3 SC when it comes around to buying a new car, and I don't think that the Astra Wagon/Estate is going to make the trip to the US from Europe, although it would be perfect for me space-wise. If we end up having just one little person, than the Astra will still probably be just fine, but for 2 kids and my wife, cargo room will become precious in a hurry.
And I have seen the back of a Legacy Wagon, and that puppy is huge. I was very envious when I saw all of that room. Unfortunately, there are no longer any Legacy Wagons with a manual, and I will not buy an Automatic. Also, fuel economy is crap on the Legacy (GT or not). An impreza wagon would be more my speed in a subaru, even if the fuel mileage is still not very impressive. I have high hopes for the new impreza however, maybe it will be a viable choice.
