I think the Koreans see the market differently than the Japanese. Hyundai is coming out with a rear drive V8 in 2008 or 2009, priced in the low to mid $30K range. I think we'll see them with some interesting stuff.
It won't be an equivalent to a Euro car, but I can see where they can produce something that would certainly compete. Relatively few people buy a BMW/Audi/MB for its performance: they buy it for ego, image and maybe a perception of value. That's where Hynudai would have trouble competing: they've been a bottom feeder for so long. But a few years competing with Yota and Nissan at the lower end of the Lexus/Infinti zone could change a lot of perceptions, especially when it comes to price.
