Unfortunately, I can't compare a N/A 944 to the 951 but here are my thoughts on the 951:

1. Perfectly neutral handling and very forgiving at the limit
2. Very easy to mod to pretty respectable levels - mine was 365HP/395TQ at the wheels when it was done. In a 3,000 pound car, this equated to pretty strong acceleration with a top speed in excess of 180MPH ;-)
3. Great brakes
4. Built to last but expensive to maintain. Although it it is not a 911, it is still a Porsche so it can be very expensive to maintain. My tranny blew three months into ownership and the $1,700 bill was my indoctrination into Porsche ownership. If you can't keep afford to keep a few grand in reserve for repairs, don't even think about buying the car. Trust me, I know this from experience!!
5. The turbos still look pretty sharp, even after all of these years!

If you're not looking for the car to be a daily driver, I think the 951 is still a tremendous value and a solid choice for a weekend toy. A decent example is only $5,000 - $8,000 but keep in mind that this is still a 20 year old car (give or take) so you should buy the newest car you can afford. The 1989 951 has all of the desirable features of the '88 Turbo S and would be a very good choice.

Good luck!

Regards,

Derek
