Randy,
Hope all's well!
The base ignition timing for the 1988 900 turbo was 16 dbtdc and the ignition retard diaphragm is designed to reduce timing 5 degrees (to 11 degrees btdc) under maximum turbocharger boost pressures.
If working with additional turbocharger boost pressures, a slight increase in retard to 10 dbtdc may be required to stay clear of detonation. The additional retard should also increase turbocharger boost pressures since this will encourage higher exhaust velocities driving the turbine. For base timing, an increase to 18-19 dbtdc will provide better off boost engine performance.
As Tyler mentions, the ignition diaphragm can be altered to allow for an increased actuator lever extention. This would allow you to increase your 5 degree extension to an 8 or 9 degree. Base timing will then be able to be set to 18 or 19 dbtdc while allowing for a retard to 10 dbtdc when under maximum charge pressures.
Best of luck and regards,
Gary K at SWEDISH DYNAMICS,INC.
