I had the same problem (9000 2.3T '92) a few weeks ago, solved last week.
0. Oil, oil filter, fuel filter changed (25.000km, my fault) - result = 0
1. The mechanix made some diagnostic, but only some minor issue with the lambda sensor was logged in the computer and after solving it (loose screw on downpipe - false air) the problem remained the same.
2. After test run they said it's a typical spark plug problem. Well it was allready 50000km done on those NGK's, so it was logical. Changed them - result = 0, problem still present, even worse. It seemed like the situation is deteriorating from minute to minute.
3. DI changed (for testing purposes only) - result = 0
4. Fuel pressure measured and detected lower than expected. Suddenly the fuel pump changed to new one. Surprisingly it was still the original one inside. After 13 yrs and 265.000 km it pumped cca 300 hectolitres of fuel (netto) and still worked, but could be the point of failure in the future... but result = 0
5. New knock sensor tested - result = 0
6. Some other sensors too - result = 0
7. Cylinder pressure measured - pressure almost OK, 1 cylinder kinda lower, possible piston ring wear, but shouldn't cause the problem atm - result = 0
8. Injectors checked (just for fun) and VOILA!!! 2 of them cracked! 1 totally (reason of problems), 1 starting. They changed them to some used ones from a crashed Aero (no new high pressure injectors in stock, no money to buy new ones availble in pocket) and the problem looks solved.
The whole process took cca 16 hrs of wrk, costed cca 1400$ :o( but U know... so good luck
