We have done that exact thing for a downpipe for our C900, and are going to be working on a 9000 Aero exhaust starting tonight (Drew = Excited) and it is very feasible, you just need either a TIG or sheilded MIG, to keep the molten stainless happy.
I was reading a Lincoln Electric book on the various forms of arc welding and a book by Carrol Smith on race car engineering that covered a lot on materials, and when welding, the stainless and other carbon steels alloy whatever you are welding to a certain extent, so the weld pool will pull some of the Chromium, the corrosion resistent component of stainless, into the weld a LITTLE bit, it will not be exactly the same alloy as the stainless obviously, it will be less than the surrounding area, but they will mix a little. You want to weld with stainless filler.
309 stainless filler is specifically marketed for welding stainless to mild, and it has a higher concentration of alloying elements than the mild, or say 304, if that is what you are welding.
