Externals are larger and give better more stable (no boost creep) boost control, especially at higher boost & high CFM levels like with BIG turbo's.
Internals are simpler, cheaper, self-contained in the turbo unit, but suffer from more issues with float and often are weaker and smaller. Due to their design boost creep is a lot more common & it just cannot controll boost as well.
You can also vent the external to the atmosphere like what I did on my SPG :) It's loud but works the best
