I especially liked the part about how there's really good tuning going on here in the states, because it's so true. All of the SQR cars that performed so well at SOC were actually tuned in person, in the US, on good old American asphalt. :)
I did not ship my car to Sweden to have it tuned, nor did my ECU arrive on a DHL truck. Those wacky things called airplanes carry people and fly quite regularly between Stockholm and Boston, which is where my car was tuned. When I last looked, it was still condidered part of the USA (although there's some dispute about the People's Republic of Cambridge) :)
And we're in total agreement about the fact that a dyno queen might not be as fast on the street, which is one reason for sticking with a GT-series turbo, or even an 18T over some T28 or T32 monstrosity that takes 4,000 RPM to even think about spooling.
Those numbers at attitude will always be horribly inflated, John, for all the reasons we've tried so hard to explain for so long. If you're sticking to them, then that's fantastic! Go for it! (But.....remember that folks on another forum got so tired of hearing about it, they offered to pay for your gas and at least part of your lodging to come prove those numbers at SOC. You declined.)
And those conservative numbers are actually a good thing, in my opinion. My car spends most of the week ferrying a 2-year-old around town, and me to work and back. I need a safe reliable car that has adequate power, which is one of the reasons I love Saab. Dyno queens are for folks whose identity seems wrapped up in their car's power output; whether as compensation for perceived shortcomings or as a self-esteem builder, no one can say.
I also need a car that doesn't detonate horribly at WOT, and one that starts when I need it to.
That last point is probably the best reason I went with who I did.
See you next year?
