We need to know some more about your car, mods etc.
Do you mean 18 degree static timing? not eight? What is the state of your distributor timing module, modified or stock? overboost switch? Fuelsystem and intercooler? do you have an LED wired to your APC so you know if it hears a ping?
Too much retard shows up as low power with and high EGT, but smooth, not a misfire.
I don't like that dawes design. I really prefer a relieving pressure regulator, since it doesn't cause any air leaks that mess with fueling. To make the bleeder perform, you will need a restrictive orifice in the upstream side, or you won't be doing anything but causing a manifold air leak. I would put this device as close to the BTM as possible.
I would say that a mityvac plus (or any air pump and a calibrated gauge) is required to set this up, you can figure out exactly what your doing to your timing instead of tweak, drive, tweak, drive. Some important information like what actual PSI the relief is set to, can also be determined.
I replaced the potentiometer knob with one of much less resistance to get a better control window in the low end of the range.
