If you are not plannig to compete under a single sanctioning body, you're best bet is to drop in an autopower rollcage and leave as much of the car stock as possible. In virtually any class in any organization, removing items to allow for the fitting of safety equipment is free (though dashes usually must be intact) so basically anything behind the driver can typically be pulled to make room for the cage. In most cases fitting of a racing seat to allow for the use of proper racing harnesses is also free, the possible exception being some showroom stock classes.
The above configuration will be pretty good for scca, ihra, autox, iceracing, hill climbs etc (don't forget to use proper high denstiy foam around any area that a occupant could contact the cage)
The really get down to it, you need to not only look at what the sanctioning body says, but what the rules for the particular class you want to run in are (ss, street touring, street prepared, etc)
