about the speed limit; I've read that one of the main reasons for the low speed limit in the U.S. is the lobbying of insurance companies. I don't know how accurate that is but in any case you have to admit that if you have a good car (or motorbike) and you are a marginally capable driver, 55mph is quite slow.
I'm not saying that 135mph in traffic is OK -it's very dangerous- but it is still beyond me that police should set up a road block for that person. He hasn't escaped for prison; they can take his license plate number and give him a huge fine.
I shouldn't have said the part about cops beating people; up it's a dangerous generalization...
In my experience though -and other Europeans reading should comment-, you won't be chased in this manner for breaking the speed limit in Europe (120km/h=75mph).
Furthermore, most people are likely to stop when signalled to by police. Leniancy to the speed limit also is much more. Lots of people travel at over 125mph is Italy, France etc.
In the event that you do get stopped for breaking the limit whatever speed you are travelling, you get a large fine, and points on your license, but it's not that big a deal that you will run away in a kamikaze chase.
