I think your exaggerating a bit or just put out by the cost of a Saab. Either way, I feel your pain.
I had a SCC mag sitting here. They featured a MR-2 Spyder they dyno'd at 122HP stock. After a T-28 tranplant they were able to produce 259HP at 12psi. The problem is you have to read between the lines. It was not as simply as just throwing on a turbo. Most turbo kits run over 3K and only allow low boost(around 5-6psi). To get the boost into turbo charged car territory they had to build a one off kit which inluded a custom Spearo air to water intercooler. Then in order to make the MAF read they used a custom unit from ARC. Associated plumbing etc...was custom. It does not look that expensive till you start adding in all the parts. Then the labor bill shows up. I'm guessing they had 5K in labor to achieve these results. You'll find quite often to get the 300HP figures out of a 4 cylinder you have to go to a stand alone engine management system to the tune of around $1500. That's the cheap part. Getting it to run will double if not triple the price.
Anymore the stuff that makes it into those magazines has 15K plus in aftermarket components. I have an 87 Chrysler conquest that I have put close to 10K in and it's not done yet. It's the little stuff that adds up.
