Hi,
We have both an '01 4dr Viggen (stick, of course) and an '86 850 Turbo (automatic). I test drove a T5 at that time, as well as more recently, the new S60/T5 (automanual). Major differences!
Turbo "lag": limited in either car -- I think what we're feeling in the 850/S70 is the shape of the torque curve -- not a whole lot of torque under 3000 rpm, and then zoom, off you go. In that respect, I find the automatic on the Volvos a pain, as the onrush of torque is not inherently controllable as it is with a stick. Both cars, though, you mash down the gas, and they go.
The Viggen is 600 pounds lighter! I really notice the difference when I get back into the Volvo. Even though the brakes are great, I feel the whole weight of the car behind me! The Volvo, for that reason, sounds more solid -- the doors have a better "thunk" when closing.
The suspension: the Viggen's is "peppier", though at times a bit bouncy (trouble keeping wheels on ground, such as braking hard over bumpy surfaces). I feel that the Volvos have a great chassis, engine, and then they slap on low-profile wheel/tire combinations, but don't have a suspension that matches.
As far as stiff ride goes, the Viggen's is great on asphalt freeways, but it's short wheelbase is tiring on L.A. concrete freeways, as you get rattled quite a bit. This is where the increased mass helps, I think.
Fundamentally, the Viggen is a sports car, whereas the Volvos are sporty, IMO.
