My friend and I just test drove the Volvo S60 T5. We drove to the Volvo dealership in my Viggen. The T5 was auto, unfortunately. The T5 seems to have a little nicer interior, but it has wood, which I personally think does not belong in a car. Brushed aluminum, yes; wood, no. The Viggen would eat the Volvo for lunch. Even though the T5 supposedly has more power than the Viggen, the Viggen is lighter and the brakes are much better. It's also smaller, which allows it to turn much faster.
If you think that the Volvo has a stiff suspension, you should test drive the Viggen. It's very stiff. In the twisties, the stiff suspension helps, but on rough roads on a long trip, it can be annoying. However, I just finished several long road trips (800+ miles on one), and the suspension only rarely annoyed me.
Also, if you like to floor it in second gear, you're going to get torque steer/"viggen dance." If you don't floor it in second/third gear (it's probably there in 1st also, but this gear is torque limited and you're out of it quickly), you'll rarely notice torque steer. Of course, why are you buying a Viggen if you don't floor it every once in a while? Just be sure to keep one hand on the wheel during your test drive, especially while shifting from 1st to second with the pedal mashed!
There are very different cars. If you're single or if a family is a ways off, I'd get the Viggen. It's fun as heck, yet very practical. During my road trip, we took a ton of stuff and didn't even fill the trunk. If you're married with two children, the Viggen is a bit small and you don't need all that power anyway, unless the spouse really gets into being a passenger in a fast car and blowing by slowpokes.
Even though my friend loves my Viggen (he's the one who told me to go drive it), he would buy the Volvo (manual, not auto) because it's still powerful and yet it's biggern than the Viggen and more family-oriented.
