I know how you feel. I have an '85 SPG with 267K. It took a full year to get it running right. It looked perfect when I bought it, but there was a lot that she needed. And still needs about $700 more worth of suspension work, but I love the car and am going to pay for it.
Obviously, the car is only worth so much money, so it's pretty much up to you on if it's really worth putting in more money than the car is even worth. I did, and will continue putting money in too her, I finally have it so it's reliable and good running, when I first got her, the turbo wasn't even working right, it needed all new engine hoses, it stalled out all the time, among other things. I had a tune-up, master air flow regulator put in, hooter valve, misc. heater, &in dash parts (the heater didnt even work), the radio didn't work either, I had a cd player and speakers installed, as well as the electric system worked on, new tires, K&N air filter, I have about 20 different reciepts from the foriegn car shop of times that I brought it there to have work done, with about $200 worth of parts &labor on each one, new sway bar bushings, hatch back shocks, new windshield, I had it brought to a windshield place because it kept leaking (had a new seal put in), new carpeting, headliner, refurbished seats by saab, new floor mats, professionally waxed-buffed, extra large whale tail, hella 550 fog lamps, side vent covers, and next I am getting the glass tinted, VDO gauges installed (cockpit style), lowering springs and four new shocks. I paid $3,400 for it and have spent a couple thousand on it since. But it's ok, because I love the car.
I am also having the hood repainted, bumpers &air dam refinished, and I had a new saan badge put on the hood.
So it's pretty much up too you, if the car beguns to actually be a problem and is costing you a serious ammount of cash, it's probley best to look for another one. :(
So what has gone wrong with it?
Good luck!
Gordon
