Americans will find this hard to believe, (I know I did) but in England you can advertise a car loan at 8% and you the loaner decide what that means. There are NO regulations to create a level playing field, so watch out when you sign up for such a loan and it turns out to mean you pay 8% of the original loan value divided by 12 every month for the entire term of the loan, which any finance major can tell you is really 16% (yes, it happened to this finance major).
More generally, it is a cultural thing - the English hate to complain ("it wouldn't be polite"), so as consumers they get horribly abused. Building codes (when they exist at all) are routinely violated so even houses fall apart and there is little recourse.
The original question here was from a Finn wanting to buy a British magic device that is clearly a rip-off (and most of the respondents agreed). My advice was to stay away - even if you live in Britain it is hard to get your money back from people who sell such obvious crap.
Maybe I was a little strong about the Brit thing - I loved the country and the people. Being a consumer there sucks, though.
