Theory question for you engineering types

I was talking about this with some friends here at work today and nobody could come up with a really good answer...
Firstly, is it correct to say that in the calculation of frictional force, one only uses a coefficient of friction (dependent on the two materials in contact and whether they are already sliding against each other or not) and the normal force? Meaning that surface area is not necessary...
If that is true...where is the advantage of having wide tires on your car...in terms of how much force they can take before slipping? I'm not talking about profile, because I can see the advantage in that...but how does the width of a tire actually affect forces it can take before spinning or slipping sideways?
I must be missing something obvious...
