Unless you increase the weight of the car, you won't get more contact with the road by using wider tires. Think about it, the car still weighs the same. The contact patch is different of course, because the weight distribution is different. Smaller tires tend to "cup" (bow) in the middle under hard lateral acceleration whereas wider tires don't cup so easily. I had a poplar science article about this years ago, I have to do some diggin' to find it, if I still have it.
