Do you own an SPG? Probably not. It costs the same to insure as a 900 Turbo, because there's no identifying flag in the VIN to differentiate an SPG from a Turbo. Only Saab knows from their own records if it was originally an SPG.
I'm looking at my Saab "Model Identification 1956-2001" poster on my wall. My car is an '85, and the engine identifier in the VIN is "L", which according to the official Saab poster wasn't a choice that year. Most likely an error on the poster, because the owner's manual says the engine choices for that year were 8v NA and 16v Turbo. Supposedly there was only J for injected (8v) and S for 16v turbo. In '86 L means 16v turbo with intercooler. Sure enough, my insurance company is insuring it as a 900T. I gave them the VIN, they said "'85 Saab 900 Turbo" and my premium *dropped* $22. That's right, my '85 SPG is costing me less to insure than my '89 Ford Taurus did with the same coverage.
