I have 18x7 in rims on my 88 SPG which weigh LESS then the OEM 15 in SPG rims! I stuck the OEM rim/tire (all season michelin something 195-60-15) on a scale & 41-42 lbs was the weight & the tires were almost at the tread marks. I then stuck my 18x7 rims with 225-35-18 tires on there & 42 lbs was the weight but the tires only had 500 miles of use. Thus these do NOT add the massive unsprung weight that many people talk about. Sure, since the weight is farther towards the outside of the rim, 42 lbs with a 15 in rim ia not equalt to 42 lbs with a 18 in rim it does make it harder for the motor to move them.
Pot hole wise, yes, you have to watch what you hit but my brother in his OEM 98 900 SET rims bend easier then my setup! & a simple rubber mallet fixes mine :o)
I highly suggest instead of bashing this setup you take a ride in a car with larger rims & see for yourself how comfortable they do ride. My 88 SPG rides to soft for my liking with intrax/koni & I will someday turn up the notch on the koni's to firm it up a bit. It's much more compliant then the OEM springs.
This also gave me room for the AP Racing brakes which probably weigh half of what the OEM brakes are (less unsprung weight).
Traction is also far superior since I can use a 225-35 & keep almost the exact overall diameter.
Taking a rid will also allow you to see how much better the car handles
