Yes, I was speaking from relative ignorance.
I was basing my comments on what I had read in several (different) motoring magazines. However, it was interesting to read the bb discussion on new stiffer chasis in modern cars, and design specifications. Perhaps 17 inch is the perfect size for new saabs.....
As for as I understood larger rims are heavier, and moving the weight to the outside of a rim makes a very big difference in a rotating wheel (simple physics). Race cars use the nice large rims for two main reasons, firstly so they can fit bigger brakes/better brake cooling and secondly as a way of reducing tyre wall flex. Racing cars also usually use Magnesium alloy rims which are very light. Thus bigger rims do help performance.
Having said this, upgrading rim size is probably the last step I would take in a performace street car project, as the performace benefits are marginal compared to equivelent (cost) upgrades on engine, exhaust, shocks, springs and so on. Although a brake upgrade is always a good idea to consider early in any performace car project.
Perhaps my views have become jaded by the number of import lancers i see with 17 inch rims and tiny drum brakes at the rear........
