A turbocharged engine loses less at high altitude than a naturally aspirated one does, because the turbo is pumping more air (hence more oxygen) through the combustion chambers which aids combustion, whereas a naturally aspirated engine obviously has to rely on itself alone. I'm sure most people on this board don't need me to point this out! I don't see how the boost at high altitude can in itself cause any harm, I believe the problem stems from using inadequate octane fuel, as is pointed out here by another post. The problems associated with using too low an octane are possibly exacerbated by the altitude and relative lack of oxygen. I would have thought that Trionic engine management would make allowances for this, and consequently reduce boost? Doesn't it take oxygen and octane into account? I suspect this is a case of a story having some basis in truth, and getting carried much further... When turbocharged Formula One cars raced in Mexico city in the mid - late 1980's, for some reason the four cylinder cars did relatively better than the six cylinder cars. I never heard a logical explanation for that, if anybody knows one, I'd love to hear it.
