I'll jump in here... Posted by Justin VanAbrahams [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: I'm thinking somebody already snagged the rear bar..., Eric van Spelde, Mon, 24 Dec 2001 15:58:18 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I drove my '86 900S with a front-only for about four months as, like an idiot, I'd neglected to pull the bolts when I grabbed the rear swaybar and as such couldn't reinstall.
Anyway, to be completely honest, I was never accutely aware of much understeer running only a front. There were a couple times when it was apparent, such as on 270-degree freeway onramps at high speed, but never truly intrusive and always very predictable. Given the choice, I would definitely choose to run front-only instead of no swaybar at all. Even with Bilstein Turbo shocks and Jamex lowering springs the S was *way* too eager to roll the body running without.
So, all that said, I'd certainly install the front even if that's you're only one. I would however keep my eyes open for a rear - it keeps the car handling how the engineers intended!
In terms of installation, I'm afraid I don't know what's involved. "Early cars" will not accept a later swaybar without also swapping the lower a-arms. I learned this the hard way on my '80 5-door. Unfortunately, I don't know when Saab started using the "later-style" lower a-arms... It was surely done by '84, but I don't know precisely when.
