From a "car recycler" lot this afternoon I pulled an OEM front swaybar from an 88 SPG. No rear swaybar was to be found, or else I'd have pulled that as well. My aim is to install a set of swaybars onto my 82 C900T 4 door.
Couple of questions: will this 88 front bar even fit with my 82 suspension? I pulled it mainly because of the ease of removal, given that both the engine and steering rack were gone from the donor car. And at $12.50 I won't be out much if it won't fit. Visually, the 82 lower A frame has a similar machining, joining surface and bolt pattern as on the 88. And yes, I'm aware I'll have to drill mounting holes along the frame behind the steering rack. That's the easy part for me (I did aircraft airframe repair work for the military years back).
The other question is: with just a front bar installed, will there be any noticable handling or will I just be creating more of a problem? I do understand the under and over-steer issues and how sway bars address each one. I live up in one of Los Angeles' remote canyons, with lots of steep hills and plenty of both long sweeping and sharp curves. A very fun drive in this classic SAAB Turbo. I rarely reach speeds where understeer is much of a problem, but I do notice the oversteer tendency at times, perhaps because of the lengthier 4 door design. So my thinking is that a front sway bar to address the oversteer can't hurt. But again, without the rear sway bar, will just the front SB be effective as designed?
Your wisened input is much appreciated. And, anyone have an unused rear bar they want to sell?
