though this is the common complaint. I would guess that the pinion bearings are more likely to go faster than normal in a medium-power set-up, where third gear is not pounded on as much as in a high power set up.
In a high power set up, third gear is the time bomb, or so it appears. From your same friend, an old post states that "only the worst people in Sweden destroy third gear, and they have extremely high horsepowers and torque." I guess that's me. I'm a bad, bad person.
Third gear is specified as the weak link in those set-ups, and I've seen two third gears (not both in my own car, thank God) blow up in 20+ psi set-ups. Until that is solved, seems there is no point to pushing on third so hard; unless you're willing to build a tranny every 2 - 3 years.
I now have the 89+ pinion in my SPG, BTW (1991 box, S primaries [3.89:1 final drive] 1990 gears).
Anyone with a Quaiffe LSD on here? Anyone worried about cracking their tranny case?
