My pinion bearings and 1st & 2nd gears appeared to be ok. What does abrupt power transition and wheel spin have to do with 3rd failing, besides hard shifts into 3rd? Not questioning your reply, but rather looking for a more detailed answer. :)

Got the imporved shoes on there now (Pilot Sports), and Bilsteins and Intrax ready to go. A problem with my exhaust hangers is preventing installation of the Intrax, since the pipe clamp at the back of the MSS glasspack would be dragging on the ground at that point (I am using the hanger set that came with the MSS system); thus the Bilsteins ain't on yet either. Once they are all on the car, only time will tell from there as far as the tranny being able to withstand the excessive power.

I did drive like a jackalope, but not constantly. Drag racing (legal) and a few 4K clutch dumps (at the track) did not help things, but then again, 1st gear was ok. 3rd was picking up 20 psi + of boost, but at speed, after 12 - 15 psi going through 1st & 2nd with lots of wheelspin. I would expect the pinion bearing and case to bear the brunt of abrupt power changes and wheelspin. I could spin the tires in 3rd, but only if I wanted to. The worst thing I did was to drop from 5th to 3rd (at 55 mph or so) and nail it on occassion. I think that explains what happened to me more than anything (along with the HPs it's pumping out).

My main problem is still clutch slip under super boost. I have no idea how you all are using stock clutches with all of this power and not having this problem. My clutch package has 1k miles on it.

Anyway, the pinion and/or case crack would likely have followed soon after (maybe another 10K miles or so) the death of 3rd. None the less, it was 3rd that went 1st, which IMHO = weakest link.
