K&N filter - bad power loss at low revs...(long-ish)

Hi all
I recently fitted a K&N-type filter to my 85 900 Aero Turbo, and while mid to top-end performance is slightly better, i have a real problem after coming down thru the gears to a stop light, waiting for the lights to change, and then starting off smoothly. As soon as I press the accelerator down, the engine momentarily (about 1 1/2-2 seconds) dies nearly completely, to the point of near stall, and then takes off with a rush. Generally this is a problem in the lower gears where engine revs are rising rapidly - i.e. it's incredibly touchy and hard to take off at all smoothly. Is there some other adjustment i can make to overcome this surging? Should I just re-install the original air box and live with it? The reason I put the K&N on in the first place was to make room for a 8" fan behind the intercooler, and now - if you think about it - the intercooler gives off heat as air passes through it, and this hot air is going straight back into the air filter. Instead of cooling the incoming air charge, i'm caught in a heating loop. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated - TIA.
