You are an alarmist.
Pistons also fail on non turbo engines.
If knock is controlled, then problems will not occur on a properly maintained and set up system.
The problem with forged pistons is their high expansion rate. Cast hyper eutectic alloys are much more stable in this regard.
If boost is increased and fuel air ratios are not maintained, or compression ratios are increased, detonation is a real threat. When knocking occurs, the head gasket or the moving parts will fail. When knocking occurs, forged pistons will also fail.
When engine work is done, it is important to control piston squish volumes. This is often neglected when replacing pistons as part of an over bore or when shaving the head or even the block.
When something fails, you have to look beyond the damaged part to find the root cause. Focusing on the obvious is not the correct way to proceed. Instead of asking why the piston failed, ask what caused the piston to fail.
