FWIW, I had an '80 900T that suffered a piston failure. Overreved, detonating, and 20PSI of boost all at the same time, gee I wonder why this happened ;^)
As I recall (this was about 10 years ago), some symptoms were similar to yours. Initiallly, excessive blowby - oil appearing on the outside of the dipstick. As time went on, it developed an increasing "rapping" noise like from a bad rod bearing. Don't recall if there was much smoke out the exhaust. It still ran quite well.
In any event, I actually drove the car for about 3 months until the noise got bad enough that it prompted me to pull the motor and investigate. Put in a used piston, slapped it back together, and drove the car for about 25K more miles until I stuck a 16-valve in it. When people say Saab motors are rugged, they're not kidding!
