a hybrid turbo. I have a Mitsu TE05 right now, and it spools up super fast, at least in comparison to the Garrett I had on there. The rest of my set up allows for 22+ psi of boost, which is well beyond the turbo's efficiency range. Thus the band-aid game begins. Spiking the intake temperature by filling the engine with super hot inefficient turbo compressed air will reveal minor gains in performance when compared with the same boost levels from a more efficient turbo.
The T3/T4 ball bearing hyrbid (turbonetics, forced performance, etc) is supposed to be just such an animal, especially for our street-driven low displacement vehicles. Who here has one? Who here has the SPG9 turbo? What is their turbo, anyway (trim specs)?
Another important difference between street and track cars are the huge differences in exhaust systems. Street cars in most states are required to have catalytic converters and mufflers. These are members of the backpressure system, though further down the line. Free flowing and high revving race engines do not have to factor in these restrictions when selecting a turbo.
As ChrisX says, the trannies he has lying on the floor are testament to the ultimate limitation here, anyway.
