Rod knock sounds like, well...knocking! Kind of like someone is lightly knocking on a solid wood door. :) It's a lower pitch than any tick you'll hear, be that timing chain or fuel injectors/rail or lifters, and does sound like it's coming from deep in the engine, not the head.
That's the best way I can describe it. Oh also, advancing the timing made it much worse, whereas all other ticks and noises stayed the same with timing. I heard it most in either 1st or 2nd gear, driving around parking lots slowly, but eventually I was able to hear it even driving down the freeway. The shop said the engine wasn't going to grenade on me, and gave it another year, but listening to that sound was driving me insane!
