Just got off the phone with Abbott. I asked for the flow results on the 9K IC, which is not on the website, and they kindly provided.
As per the flow measurements posted earlier, at 10" water:
* Stock (late) 9000 IC 81 cfm
* Abbott Racing 30 mm core 103 cfm
* Abbott Racing 40 mm core 131 cfm
So of all the OE intercoolers the 9K actually flows the worst, and the late c900 IC the best, except for (probably) the Viggen IC!
Abbott said they were flabberghasted by the bad flow characteristics of the 9K cooler. Apparently there is a -lot- of turbulence effectively preventing the airflow from entering the tubes. They developed a theory about Saab desiging this on purpose so the air would stick around a little loger thus shedding more heat in the process.
Abbott agreed that going to the 9K intercooler on a c900 would be good for heat evaporation and bad for flow (-> pressure drop).
The other alternative -the Abbott chargecooler- was quickly dismissed because a) it was not designed to take more than 1.2 bar boost pressure and b) if you run 1.2 bar though it for extended periods, it will break. All according to Abbott themselves...
Morale: don't judge an IC by its basic working principle.
