ICs seem to be a hot topic recently (no pun intended). I was thinking about the various flow and pressure drop data that've been batted around and, in particular, pressure drop. It seems to me that an IC's pressure drop values can't be accurately determined with the IC in situ because the cooling effects of the IC will give colder air on the outlet side, thus a greater pressure differential than would be measured if the inlet side air was ambient, not hot.
Let's say you have a really efficient intercooler of some dimensions and good flow characteristics and you compare it to an innefficient intercooler of similar dimensions and flow characteristics (by 'efficient/inefficient', I'm referring to its heat exchanging capabilities only). The more efficient intercooler will extract more heat out of the charged air, the cooler air will be of lower pressure (higher pressure drop), and you might decide to install the inferior intercooler because the pressure drop was lower.
So, it seems to me, to measure *only* pressure drop, anyway, the best way would be to do it using cool air. Or, maybe it's possible to adjust out the IC's cooling effects by figuring all the PV=nRT stuff with temp probes on inlet/outlet sides, too.
