Are you saying:
you tried a 85/6 head w/ 87-IN / 85/6 EX cams
But
You think a 85/6 head w/ 87-IN / 87- EX cams is better?
And
overall driveability and top end is better w/ the later?
It's amazing to here those results, the exhaust cam specs are (there's a mix up on the 85/6 cam specs that are circulating):
85/6: 8.65,56,16,252,110
87- : 8.65,61,13,254,114
The minor change in overlap (3deg), duration(2deg), and lobe separation(4deg) shouldn't effect it to any type of extreme. If you add an extra +10deg in overlap and I would think you'd notice a difference but not 3 deg. I wouldn't think the turbo would spool up any faster either w/ just 2deg less of duration. The only difference I would think to definitely occur between the cams, from what I've read about cam theories, is that the engine might run a little rougher and there might be a small difference in midrange due to the exhaust cam not being advanced compared to the intake.
I'm sure the 85/6 head flows better than the stock 87-, but I'd be interested to see how well the 87- would perform w/ the ceiling ramps ported down. Inaddition flow is only one concern, but what about anti- knock and preignition properties. Is there a reason why most of the automotive industry decided on the Pent roof design on most 16v cylinderheads instead of the cloverleaf? I always thought the pent roof was less proned to knock and preignition, and also had the greater controlled squish effect.
