The c900 manual trans is completely serviceable for someone with decent tools and some mechanical aptitude.

I went this way because for about $800 and some work you can replace almost all bearings and seals and gaskets, plus the lay shaft which is typically worn past spec. Compare that to $2000 for somebody else’s rebuild – which is generally only fixed to a certain nominal level of operation, not necessarily the best level! This is of course assuming that your own work *adds* to the quality of your rebuild, and you don’t create a junk box in the process!

There are only 1-2 "special" tools that are needed that aren't going to be in your garage. Some you can work-around if you have a set of depth micrometers, some you may still need a shop to perform the specific task.

For instance, on my first time I built the pinion bearing housing up and set it to the torque spec, then I paid Scanwest Autosport $75 to perform/verify the pinion bearing depth shim, ring gear side-to-side shim, and shim the gearstack in the main case. They were also a valuable resource to consult when deciding to keep or replace shift forks, shafts, etc.

Email me directly and I can answer specific questions – but you should also start looking for a shop in your area that you can get “friendly” with now. You will be buying several hundred dollars worth of parts in the process!
