Since you are near Townsend, they would be my first choice. Top notch.
Scanwest will sell and ship anywhere in the country, and sometimes you
can get it drop-shipped direct, that saves a couple days + shipping costs.
You can call either of these guys and say "give me everything i need for a
5-speed rebuild" and after they quiz you a little bit, they'll tell you what you need!
Both of those places will be sourcing parts from national parts warehouses,
which you can buy from directly - if you know what you need. The biggest
one is http://www.thepartsbin.com - online ordering, easy to navigate catalog, very
fast turnaround, no tech help of any kind! Then there is http://www.eeuroparts.com,
which is run by an ex-Saab parts guy, similar catalog, but with diagrams
and pictures from the shop manuals.
About the layshaft wear – there are 3 places to look for wear/corrosion/pitting. The
laygear (aka counter gear) runs directly on the shaft with a needle bearing at the rear
and a bushing at the front. There is also a roller bearing that runs directly on the shaft
at the front end, that supports another gear (don’t know the name PN 8725137). I just
looked at eeuro and they have the shaft for $69.50.
