It is true on a na that header tubes can be long and small in dia for max torque and low end power, or short and big for max peak hp.
It is my experience with my 83T, trying combo's of cat 'test' tube, and sport saab muffler, that response at low end was better with the cat installed ... this is initial transition into boost and not the max torque at max boost. This was not a backpressure issue, since I was measuring exh pressure off the o2 port.
For max peak torque and hp, need minimum backpressure. I think a 2.5" system is plenty for 2L-T engines, if cat and muffler are hi-flow designs. The 3" sys on my rwd track car is used often for 300-400 eng hp.
