3" Exhaust: Pros & Cons?

Hello All,
I've been following with some interest the intermittent discussion here and on the 9000 BB regarding converting out the existing exhaust of a 9k Aero to a 3" system (downpipe, cat & muffler). While everyone who has done this seems impressed, a friend of mine feels that this approach could reduce torque. Other than subjective responses that it's great, I guess what I'm looking for are facts (torque curves, dyno results) about the effects of converting. As it's a considerable expense I would want to be sure that I wasn't trading off one thing for another :-)
