The pinion bearing in C900 trannies is a weakness, but once you get beyond that, you have to deal with several other weak internal components. The forks on pre 91 boxes are weak, as are the gears themselves. I stripped half the teeth off of third gear a year ago! This was on an 88 box, of which I did not know the total history. Now I have a totally rebuilt 91 box with 89 - 90 900S (not turbo) gearing and components. It seems to be handling the power just fine.... for now!
Lack of proper fueling with the higher boost levels = predetonation inside the engine = blown headgasket. Of course, over fueling washes down the cylinder walls with fuel, decreasing oil pressure, which is also quite bad! ;o)
Check out the link below. My brother and I have been running this small mod on our C900s for about 100K miles now with pleasant results. Saab instituted this modification on their own in Aero and NG900 HO Turbos. Combine this mod, a 3.0 bar FPR, and turn the pots on the APC, and have a ball, all for under $20.
