Uh, if you think this was a rant, you've not been onto this board, or others like this, for very long... ;-)
But yess, I -am- wondering about folks failing to come to terms with what is a sound mechanical package to which there'w lots of well documented ways of improving, and think they can do better by converting it to '50s Amurrican low-tech. And think about it: if you can't be happy with the dependability and handling of a car you 'tweaked' whilst retaining the 900,000 times proven basic mechanical configuration, how much chance will you stand succeeding with basically designing and building an entirely new package - even if you wouldn't do it with parts that are a better fit to a pick up truck than to high performance machinery?
I'm not an engineer - I'm (amongst other things) a technical editor for an automotive trade magazine. But I *do* know good engineering has nothing to do with fashion. It's a matter of establishing your goals, defining the problem(s) and finding *appropriate* means to solve them. There is a genuine engineering reason for Saabs being the way the are and before you start hacking about, you better make sure you appreciate them. There's enough halfwits out there who sneeze at factory engineering and think they can do everything better. More often than not, they're not getting anywhere.
