Shotpeening rods and (less important maybe) the crankshaft is a good thing for sure, that doesn't add huge amounts to the cost. Weighing the rods (and pistons, if not custom) should be standard practice on a hi po rebuild. Saab specifies the rods must be within 6 grams of each other which is a lot already, but when Frank weighed the road that came out of my '87 B202 block there was 12 grams between them! According to him, it was a small miracle the old engine ran half decently at all...

I'm running 92 mm forged Cosworth pistons. Sure, at present exchange rate they run about $1,000 for the set, but at $4-500 for a set of stock Mahle's, against the total cost of a rebuild plus all the little things that add up when you're putting it all back together and in the engine bay, it is not such a big difference anymore. You only want to do this work once, and at 481.5 g each they were 37.5 grams lighter than the stock items which makes for a smoother revving engine alone. Having stuff in there that is somewhat more tolerant to mildly adverse running conditions pays off for piece of mind - you'll have to drive a thousand miles or so of running-in before final set up on road or dyno, and before that your ignition settings might be a bit off, the fuel mixture leaning out, etc.
*Especially* when you're going aftermarket for engine managemnt and have to build the maps virtually from scratch...

I ported my '87 cylinder head to match a 2.1 manifold- but that was because I need to shift the power band towards the upper end of the range - at my targeted power, you need to be easy on the low/midrange torque to get something that's driveable with FWD and doesn't eat gearboxes at such an alarming rate... You do need to overcome the rev limiter in this case, though.
