I would search more than just this bulletin board for your answers to a technical question like that. Ceramic coating I think helps some, but definitely keeps exterior corrosion to a minimum.
I know from experience on wrapping Exhaust headers and downpipes, that there ARE some performance gains to be had. HERE'S WHY. It helps to 'Scavenge' the exhaust quicker, which creates less back pressure, and thats important for turbo engines. As Exhaust cools at the outer edge of the exhaust pipe quicer than the center of the exhaust, the Cooler air starts to circle back up toward the center where the warmer air is. This creates a turbulence, therefore added back pressure.
When you insulate evenly with header wrap, it doesnt allow it to cool as fast, until its farther down the line; where a little turbulence wont cause as much problem as it will when its first trying to exit the engine!
THEN THERE'S 1. Lest burnt knuckles when performing small, quick tasks on a not yet cooled down engine.
2. On one vehicle I swear I noticed at least about a 40 degrees or more, drop in under hood temperatures!! That in itself can be a performance gain, for not sucking up as hot of air into the intake, and making wires, insulators, vacuum hoses and other such items last much longer!
Ceramics I dont know as much about, except they can look prettier, and cost a bit more to have done.
LASTLY. I've been told by a couple performance Guru's, you dont want to wrap you whole exhaust system, Just the Manifold(Header) and the downpipe to the point where they pretty much have exited the whole engine compartment. Doing any more than that they said isn't beneficial or cost effective. AND usually you have to buy a special 'Blanket' but Wrapping the hot side of the turbo Also helps it to spool faster, and scavenge the hot gasses as fast as possible.
Those are my experiences and info recieved from knowledgeable, Seasoned guru's. Anyone Else??
