Gah, well, I'm not a welder by trade...
I just got rid of my welder (read: brother) for 6 weeks. I will say that I dislike mig in general, although it's useful for quick repairs etc, I find wire feed to be a bit sloppy (mostly my hand probably). I doubt you will be doing any aluminum without TIG. Also, 1/4" aluminium could take 250+ amps to weld... Basically aluminum dissipates so much heat, you need to throw a whole lot of power at it in order to melt only what you want to. I don't know if you've used one before, but once you use a tig with a pedal, and experience what control can be, the only thing that could possibly make you want to go back to mig, is the cost of the machine.

Lincoln has some metalurgy & welding books, even if they are a little technical for most people. They have good information in them.

As for circuitry, I'm really clueless, but I would bet good old fasioned inductive power supplies will last much longer than the "inverters", and are probably more efficient. Also consider the duty-cycle of the welder you purchase, and how you plan on using it. Many of the mig machines are quite low duty compared to the (doubly priced) tig units which are really made for professional / heavy use.
