Justin,
I have done this before, and I think I'd concur with the others that it's a good idea, with one qualification... The one worry I'd have is the number of problems the 2.1 motor has in the head-gasket area. The boost from the turbo will stress it more, and I wonder if you might end up with major headaches.
Other than that it should be fun. You WILL be using premium gas - the motor will detonate itself into oblivion if you don't. When I tried low-octane gas in my car ('86 S), it seemed like the EZK system would "give up" trying to control knock - it would be fine to a point then start knocking like crazy (maybe it decided the knock sensor was bad?). Never had that problem with 92 octane or better gas.
It definitely won't be a fire-breathing monster, either. My car would get you across an intersection faster than anything, due to the almost-nonexistent turbo lag and short gearing. But on the highway it couldn't even come close to my SPG (same year). It *did* love to rev though, so downshifting helped a lot.
Personally, I never really found the need to have a boost gauge. The boost is so low, and comes in so fast (mine would reach its peak of 4.5 PSI at 1800 RPM) that the gauge doesn't really tell you much.

BTW if you're concerned about longevity, I sold this car to a friend of mine about 6 years ago and he's still using it as his daily driver!
